Skater of the Month

Genny as a street urchin in Hawaii Opera Theatre's production of Carmen.
April 2002
Genevieve Dunn

Genny Dunn is 12 years old and in the Seventh Grade. She started skating four years ago and has passed her Pre-Preliminary tests. In addition to Ice Palace, she has skated at San Jose Ice Center, Eastridge Rink, and Vallco Rink, CA; Roseville Municipal Rink, MN, Schwan Super Rink, Blaine, MN; as well as rinks in Sarasota, FL. Over the winter break she got to skate at Rockefeller Center in New York City and at rinks in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Genny's favorite spin is the attitude spin and her favorite jump is the waltz jump because it is so much like a jump in ballet. Her response to favorite things about skating: "You can be free with the music and the ice.  You aren't limited by friction."

Skating goals include: To do an axel, to do a forward scratch spin without turning out - "I tend to turn out because of ballet", and to do an outside spread eagle. Genny has goals outside of skating, too: To get people to see things differently, to paint a famous painting, to be a zoo educator at the Honolulu Zoo and teach others to love and understand animals.

Hobbies: Skating, painting, ballet four days a week with Ballet Hawaii, singing with Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus and more painting.
